Poland. The war started with its invasion, and ever since this spirited little country has has had a pretty rough time. The short-lived alliance between Germany and the Soviet Union overwhelmed the Polish military and sent the government into exile. Under these circumstances the Poles could do little more than watch as their beloved homeland was turned into a massive graveyard characterized by cruel concentration camps and murderous oppression. Recently, however, things have begun to look up: eastern Poland has just been liberated from Nazi rule, and the liberation of the west does not seem far off.
